Delta inaugurates Book Fair Planning Committee

The Delta State Library Board has embarked on a significant step to reignite the passion for literacy and learning in state, as it inaugurated a six-member committee charged with the planning and execution of a landmark book fair exhibition.

The fair is expected to culminate in a grand exhibition that will not only celebrate the written word, but also recognize the achievements of students, educators, and schools that have excelled in promoting literacy. Awards and recognitions may be part of the event to acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to the literary community in the state.

This was disclosed by the Chairman, Barr. Ogboru, after a painstaking assessment of the libraries across state, with members of the board when he formally inaugurated the pivotal event themed “Book Culture and School No Bi Scam” campaign that is scheduled for April 2024 in Asaba.

Ogboru said the committee headed by Mr. Edozie Remy, was carefully selected for their expertise and dedication to duty, and is composed of a blend of seasoned professionals and enthusiastic advocates of literacy.

Aside from Mr. Remy who would be bringing his wealth of experience and leadership skills to bear, other members are Mrs. Keboku Rita, Mr. Chima Sabastine, and Mr. Oboreghare Benjamine, Prince Efe Rockson, as Comrade Vincent Ugbune, serves as secretary of the committee.

While inaugurating the committee, Barr. Ogboru, clearly outlined the objectives, just as he impress upon them the critical nature of their assignment, saying, “The committee is tasked with orchestrating an event that is not merely a celebration of books and authors, but a strategic intervention aimed at reviving the dwindling culture of book reading among the youth and the general populace of Delta State.

Ogboru also emphasized the need for a collaborative approach, urging the committee to function synergistically at ensuring the success of the book fair. He articulated his vision of an event that would not only showcase the rich tapestry of literary works available but also serve as a catalyst for educational development and a competitive spirit among the schools in Delta State.

According to a statement by Prince Efe Rockson, “The book fair exhibition is anticipated to be a convergence of minds and ideas, drawing together industry heavyweights, and literary giants, as well as publishing experts, book lovers, and distinguished government dignitaries.

“The exhibition will serve as a launch pad for the “Book Culture and School No Bi Scam” campaign, which is a clarion call intended to resonate through every educational stratum in Delta State. This campaign is envisioned as a multi-faceted initiative to stock school libraries, promote academic excellence, and foster a robust reading culture that will stimulate intellectual growth and competition among students.

“In the coming weeks, the committee will engage in a rigorous planning process, reaching out to potential exhibitors, organizing workshops, and setting up promotional activities to generate buzz for the event. There will be a focus on inclusivity, ensuring that schools across the state, from the urban centers to the rural outposts, are equally represented and have the opportunity to participate in this cultural renaissance”, it states.

It noted that as the State Library Board looks forward to the book fair, “There is a palpable sense of excitement about the potential impact of this initiative. And it is hoped that through the concerted efforts of Barr. Ogboru, the planning committee, and all stakeholders, the book fair exhibition will mark the beginning of a new chapter in Delta State’s educational development and contribute to the creation of a more enlightened and literate society.

“The planning committee will also be tasked with the delicate job of curating a diverse and rich selection of literary works that will cater to a wide audience, including children, young adults, educators, and life-long learners. The book fair will not only be a place to discover new books and authors, but also a hub for engaging discussions, workshops, and forums where ideas can be exchanged and knowledge disseminated.

“Seminars and panel discussions will be arranged to address current trends in literacy, the importance of reading in the digital age, and the role of libraries in sustaining community engagement with literature.

“Recognizing the undeniable link between literacy and socio-economic development, the committee will reach out to educational institutions, corporate entities, and non-governmental organizations to foster partnerships that can ensure the book fair’s success and longevity.

Ogboru also touched on the critical role that technology plays in modern education, as he charged the committee to explore innovative ways to integrate digital platforms into the book fair, thus broadening its reach and making literature more accessible to a digitally-savvy generation.

“The incorporation of e-books, audiobooks, and interactive learning tools will be considered to appeal to a generation that consumes content in various forms and on multiple platforms”, it further explained.

The fair will also aim to inspire budding writers and publishers in Delta State by providing a platform to showcase their works alongside established names in the literary world. Workshops on writing, publishing, and marketing will be organized to nurture local talent and provide them with the tools needed to succeed in the competitive world of publishing.

In addition to the local talent, the book fair will seek to attract national and international authors and publishers, thus facilitating cultural exchange and giving local readers access to a global literary perspective. The event will also present an opportunity for local authors to gain exposure and network with others in the industry.

As the planning progresses, the committee will conduct a thorough outreach campaign to ensure that every school in the state is aware of the event and understands the benefits of participation. The campaign will be central to this outreach, challenging the perception of education while highlighting the tangible benefits of literacy and learning.
