Group embarks on flood control exercise in Eket

The Eket Special Committee on Environmental Sanitation and Waste Management, on Wednesday, kick-started measures to tackle flooding in Eket metropolis.
Its Chairman, Mr Richy Udoka, told newsmen during the exercise in Eket on Wednesday that blocked drains could lead to flooding.
Udoka said that the committee would mobilise residents of the town to embark on massive cleaning of drains to avoid blockade.
He said that the exercise was in response to the 2024 annual flood outlook released by the Federal Ministry for Water Resources.
The chairman further said that the exercise would feature environmental campaign and sensitisation on flood control around the town.
Udoka cautioned residents of the town against acts capable of blocking the drainage system.
“Disposing refuse on the drains can block the passage of rainwater, especially during the rainy season,” he said.
He said that the group had already cleared the debris in about 10.5km of drains in Eket metropolis.
“We shall take the exercise to Udofa Street, RCC Road, Afaha Eket Road, Stadium Road, Enen Ekpene, Udoumo Street, Afaha Ukwa-Etebi Idung Iwak, up  to Marina junction,” he said.
