Okpai Power plant: Nwoko wants Delta Gov to focus on unity, devt of Delta North

The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial Zone, Senator Prince Ned Nwoko, on Tuesday denied allegations making the rounds that he was working against the governor and the government of Delta State on the near-moribund Okpai Power plant and other issues.

The Senator rather enjoined the state government to shun those he described as uninformed and fake news mongers and focus on uniting the people and providing needed democratic dividends to the people of his constituency.

Prince Nwoko disclosed while reacting to allegations purportedly against Governor Sherriff Oborevwori, in a statement issued by Gloria Okolugbo, Communication Team Lead to the Senator.

He described the write-up as “A poor and uninformed attempt at polarizing my relationship with the Delta State Government without due diligence, rather raising all manners of wild speculations”.

The statement accused the unnamed author of the media propaganda for being speculative and displayed a crass ignorance of the issues, saying, “In the various write-ups, the author’s speculative information lay claims that Okpai Plant is a National Asset and not a State-owned Initiative”.

He was also accused of alleging that Senator Nwoko made a derogatory statement, stressing that the writers or authors of the write-ups digressed from speaking to the issues at hand, which according to the statement resulted from lack of understanding of the issues, thus leaving on its trail much to be desired.

According to the statement, “The analogy of what transpired during a recent Community Consultative Forum at Ezionum, where the Distinguished Senator seized the opportunity to explain to Ndokwa Ukwuani leaders what he considered as challenges bedeviling development and his efforts so far in one year of his tenure fell below expectations.

“What transpired on that occasion was purely conversational with no ill intent, but that regrettably, it has been misconstrued and politicized for the purposes of mischief”, it further stated.

The statement also explained that the distinguished senator took time to speak on a wide range of issues, especially the fact that the Senator and the Delta State Governor are of the same political family, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The statement regretted that from what it has seen in the social media space, especially that the Senator “Berated” the Governor, which is pure digression from the issues and core value of the conversation.

“Reading through the article shows complete misrepresentation of how governance works and the role of the federating units as well as the legislature”.

Nwoko in the statement explained: “Though over the years, Ndokwa people dwell where power is generated and transmitted to the National Grid, they never enjoyed or felt the positive impact of the energy project in their land, until the distinguished senator Ned Nwoko got to the National Assembly.

“In seeking to impress the Governor, it is important to get busy making productive input, not offering uninformed opinions online and unsolicited advice to the State Government not get involved in an important sector like power generation issue.”

The Statement then urged the state government to take advantage of the recent electricity reform and capture power for the host communities.

It also emphasized that the reform has completely changed the way power can be generated, transmitted and distributed in Nigeria, giving significant participation to states
