Following a bridge collapse at Lamurde Local Government Area in the state, the chairman of the Adamawa state Independence Electoral Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Umar and thousands of others were trapped near Savannah Sugar, Dangote’s Sugar factory

The Chairman spoke to journalists via telephone on Monday morning that they were trapped in Lamurde since Sunday night because a bridge linking Adamawa and Gombe states has collapsed, saying the incident has ensued traffic jam in the areas, with thousands of motorists and heavy-duty vehicles trapped on the highway presently seeking for rescue.

Mohammed called on the Federal Government and other agencies to come to their rescue, adding that because of the incessant heavy downpour, areas were over flooded and it is difficult to navigate through the bush or the river of the collapsed bridge.

Hear him: We were coming from Jigawa state via Gombe state with my team, where we went for training but on reaching close home, we were trapped because a bridge linking the state capital and Gombe state collapsed.

Also, a resident in the area of the collapsed bridge, Mr. Abel Mathew, said the bridge collapsed as a result of the recent flood due to incessant heavy downpour these few days.

He said the locals are also putting heads together to temporarily salvage the situation before the arrival of authorities concerned to handle the situation permanently.

Responding to the issue, Engr. Dimas Tuwai, the Acting Federal Controller of Works in charge of the state, said he has mobilized his men to site and before the end of the day, an alternative passage will be provided for thousands trapped.

He said it was a small bridge under construction where the contractors provided a diversion, adding that it was the diversion that was over flooded because of continued heavy rainfall these days.

The controller said commuters should bear with the disaster because his men were already in charge of the situation and  there is no cause for alarm.

He also urged travellers to be careful before driving along that road because construction is ongoing on that road.
