Piwuna succeeds Osodeke as ASUU President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, as its new national president.
Piwuna won the election against Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held at the University of Benin, Edo State.
The newly elected executive members include , Austen Sado, Vice President, Happiness Uduk, Financial Secretary, Peter Adamu, Treasurer, Celestine Aguoru, Investment Secretary, Aisha Bawa, Welfare Officer, Kassim Umar, Internal Auditor
Piwuna’s assumption of office comes amid speculation of industrial action over the contentious sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government.
Other pressing issues in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector include brain drain and the need for university revitalization and academic autonomy.
Outgoing President Emmanuel Osodeke served ASUU from May 30, 2021, to May 11, 2025, and was known for his firm opposition to policies like the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
