Brazilian football crisis deepens as Court orders Ednaldo Rodrigues’ dismissal

A court in Rio de Janeiro has ordered the dismissal of Ednaldo Rodrigues as head of the Brazilian football federation due to issues with his employment agreement.
Rodrigues had faced temporary suspension in 2023 following a court ruling that found irregularities in his 2022 election.
He was, however, reinstated after a Supreme Court judge intervened, citing potential FIFA sanctions against Brazilian football.
The recent court ruling declared Rodrigues’s employment agreement with the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) “null” and void.
FIFA and CONMEBOL had previously expressed concerns over Rodrigues’s ouster, warning that external interference in CBF affairs could lead to Brazilian teams being barred from international competitions.
Notably, Rodrigues had been leading negotiations to hire Carlo Ancelotti as the national team coach, which ultimately fell apart at the time.
Ancelotti was recently appointed to the position, replacing Zinedine Zidane.
Rodrigues had been unanimously reelected to his post until 2030 in March.
The court’s decision was based on the claim that one of the signatories to Rodrigues’s 2025 contract was mentally unfit to sign, potentially constituting “possible forgery.”
Ahead of the judgment, Rodrigues expressed confidence in the validity of the document, telling journalists at a FIFA meeting in Asuncion that he had “absolute certainty” about its legitimacy.
