Senate calls for military base in Adamawa to combat Boko Haram

The Senate has resolved to establish a military base in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State to address the rising insecurity in the region.
The decision came after a motion was debated during plenary on Wednesday, highlighting the increasing attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in Hong and Gombi LGAs, resulting several deaths and thousands displaced.
the Senate, while commending the efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security operatives,
emphasised the need to reinforce existing personnel with a permanent military base in Hong to better secure the area and prevent further escalation of violence.
According to Senator Iya Abbas, sponsor of the motion, five major attacks have occurred in Hong LGA since February.
However, Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West,, raised an objection, cautioning the Senate against overstepping its constitutional boundaries by directing the establishment of a military base.
He argued that such directives fell under the exclusive purview of the President and the executive arm of government.
In response, Senator Wasiu Eshilokun countered that the National Assembly was well within its rights to make such recommendations.
Eshilokun citing Section 217(2)(c) of the Constitution, clarified that while the deployment of military forces is an executive function, it is subject to legislative input from the National Assembly.
“To say the National Assembly has no power would be a misinterpretation, we have not crossed the line,” he asserted.
The Senate’s resolution underscored the need for a more robust security presence in Adamawa State to combat the growing threat of Boko Haram insurgency.
The establishment of a military base in Hong is expected to enhance security operations and provide a safer environment for residents.
