WHO receives $170m in pledges from global leaders to support health efforts

Global leaders have pledged at least $170 million to the World Health Organization (WHO) to support its efforts in addressing rising global health challenges.
The pledges were made at a high-level event during the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva.
The funds would support WHO’s strategy for global health, the Fourteenth General Programme of Work, aimed at saving an additional 40 million lives over the next four years.
WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed gratitude to the Member States and partners for their pledges, saying, “In a challenging climate for global health, these funds will help us to preserve and extend our life-saving work.
”They show that multilateralism is alive and well.”
The pledges include flexible contributions, which are valuable for WHO’s operations.
Some donors, including ELMA Philanthropies and Laerdal Global Health, made their pledges through the WHO Foundation.
The One World Movement, which allows individuals to contribute to WHO, has received almost $600,000 in donations from nearly 8,000 “Member Citizens” worldwide.
