Senate leader faults opposition for labelling NASS rubber stamp

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has faulted opposition parties for labeling the National Assembly a “rubber-stamp” parliament without justification or proof.
This is contained in a statement in Abuja by his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs.
Bamidele who currently represents
Ekiti Central, said that if the National Assembly was indeed a rubber-stamp, it wouldn’t have taken six months to pass the Tax Reform Bills, 2024, after they were initiated in November 2024.
He noted that the bills underwent thorough scrutiny, with over 39 meetings between the executive and legislative arms to address grey areas.
The senate Leader cited the example of the Tax Reform Bills, which involved diverse stakeholders, including civil society organisations, professional bodies, and religious leaders.
“We organised public hearings just to accommodate inputs from diverse interests,” he said.
Bamidele also cited the passage of the 2025 Appropriation Act, which took nearly two months to pass after being laid before the National Assembly on December 18, 2024.
He explained that the National Assembly engaged in thorough scrutiny and due diligence to ensure good governance.
The Senate Leader emphasised that the National Assembly was working in the interest of the people, taking into consideration the need to promote good governance.
“We are working in the interest of the people. We are always taking into consideration, the need to ensure good governance in all our undertakings,” Bamidele said.
