Children’s Day Celebration: Okpebholo rewards students for excellence

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo, has awarded N5 million each to two exceptional students who secured second place at the recent national Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) quiz competition.
The governor made the announcement during the 2025 Children’s Day celebration in Benin, highlighting his administration’s commitment to education and youth development.
The two students, who represented Edo from Itohan Girls’ Grammar School, had earlier clinched first place in the South-South region and went on to place second nationally in the prestigious competition.
Okpebholo said, “We are proud of their achievement. Edo State celebrates excellence.
“In future competitions, we will sponsor winners to international platforms.”
The governor also donated two Toyota Hiace buses to Ogbe Secondary School for Boys and India College, Benin, winners of the boys’ and girls’ football finals, respectively, during the 2025 Governor’s Cup.
On his part, the State Commissioner for Education, Dr Emmanuel Iyamu, emphasised the importance of collective effort in nurturing children.
He urged parents and communities to actively participate in promoting child welfare and encouraged students to report cases of bullying to foster safer learning environments.
The event’s highlight was the Governor’s Cup 2025 football finals, which saw spirited competition among secondary schools across the state.
India College, Benin, triumphed in the girls’ final with a 1-0 victory, while Ogbe Secondary School, Benin, edged out St. Peter’s Grammar School, Agenebode, in the boys’ final.
The 2025 Children’s Day celebration marked a vibrant display of academic and athletic talent, reinforcing Edo State’s commitment to youth excellence.
