Nigeria Customs intercepts 39,425 litres of smuggled petrol

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 39,425 litres of smuggled petrol worth N39.4 million in the Lagos-Ogun axis.
Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi announced the seizure at a news conference in Lagos, attributing the success to the dedication and resilience of Customs officers.
Adeniyi said that the petrol was intended for smuggling into Benin Republic and was seized along with eight vehicles used for transportation.
The seized petrol has a duty paid value of N39.4 million, and the vehicles are valued at N24 million, totaling N63.4 million.
“There is no safe haven for smugglers, and Customs will continue disrupting illegal activities to the barest minimum,” Adeniyi emphasised.
The Comptroller-General directed that the seized petrol be auctioned immediately to Nigerians in 25-litre jerrycans at N10,000 each.
He thanked strategic partners, including the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), the Attorney General’s office, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), for their support and cooperation.
Also, Comptroller Charles Orbih, Zonal Coordinator, Zone ‘A’ of NCS, reaffirmed the service’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring policy benefits reach all citizens.
“Every litre smuggled across the borders causes revenue loss, scarcity, market instability and weakens energy security,” Orbih noted.
Representatives from ONSA, NMDPRA, and the Attorney General’s office commended Customs’ efforts in intercepting smuggled petroleum products and pledged continued collaboration to combat economic sabotage.
