Niger State flooding death toll rises to 150

The death toll from the recent flooding in Niger State, Nigeria, has risen to at least 150, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The agency’s spokesman, Ibrahim Husseini, said the increase in the death toll was due to the recovery of bodies nearly 10 kilometers away from the town of Mokwa, the epicenter of the floods.
The floods have displaced more than 3,000 people, leveled more than 250 homes, and washed away two bridges.
NEMA’s spokesman said that many people were still missing, and rescue efforts were ongoing.
President Bola Tinubu had directed the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre in the state to scale up humanitarian responses to meet the needs of victims.
In a statement, the President said, “I have received with deep concern the distressing reports of severe flooding in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, which has resulted in the tragic loss of lives and the displacement of families. ”
The President assured that the Federal Government would provide support to those impacted by the incident.
“Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of,” Tinubu said.
The President called on all Nigerians to keep the affected citizens in their thoughts and prayers.
“In times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience, and shared humanity,” he said.
