Wike slams Amaechi over hunger comment

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has censured former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi over his comment on hunger.
Wike at a media parley in the nation’s capital Abuja, with some selected journalists, said Amaechi couldn’t stay out of power and his hunger comment was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.
Wike also said Amaechi’s claimed of being hungry was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians.
Wike said Amaechi’s comment was not about food, but about his hunger for power.
He noted that with more than two unbroken decades in various top public offices, Amaechi couldn’t claim that he was hungry for food.
Wike emphasised that Amaechi’s history of holding public office, including eight years as Rivers State Governor and eight years as Minister of Transportation, contradicted his claim of hunger.
Recalled that Amaechi had earlier said at an event marking his 60th birthday anniversary that he was hungry and wouldn’t mind joining the coalition led by Atiku Abubakar to trounce President Bola Tinubu at the 2027 polls.
Wike, however, disagreed with Amaechi’s assessment, stating that Amaechi’s actions were driven by a desire for power rather than a genuine concern for hunger or poverty.
“I don’t know why a man would choose his 60th birthday to tell lies.
”It’s unfortunate. Of all times, on your 60th birthday when people are celebrating you?
“He is only hungry for power and that shows failure on his part.”
“How do you insult Nigerians? How do you trivialise the issue of hunger or poverty?”
Wike and Amaechi were both former governors of Rivers State and have a history of political rivalry.
Wike took over as Rivers governor from Amaechi in 2015 after the latter had exhausted the constitutionally allowed eight-year limit.
