House of Reps pledges to boost fiscal transparency, accountability

The House of Representatives has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening good governance in Nigeria through fiscal transparency, efficiency, accountability, and responsibility.
Rep. Bamidele Salam, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, made this pledge while addressing newsmen in Abuja.
Salam said, ”a high-level National Conference on Public Accounts and Fiscal Governance (NCPAFG) will be held from July 6 to July 10, 2025, in Abuja.
”The conference, themed “Fiscal Governance in Nigeria: Charting a New Course for Transparency and Sustainable Development,” aims to set the foundation for sustainable national development.”
He added that the conference would serve as a roadmap towards greater integrity, enhanced efficiency, and robust accountability in Nigeria’s fiscal governance and public accounts management.
”The conference will provide a platform for stakeholders to deepen collaboration among Public Accounts Committees, especially at sub-national levels, ” he said.
Salam acknowledged some progress made under President Tinubu’s reforms but noted entrenched systemic challenges, including limited full-cycle audit implementation, non-enforcement of financial protocols among others.
He said that the conference is expected to: mainstream renewed hope agenda, integrate the renewed hope agenda into global fiscal governance transparency, reduce unaccounted expenditures, significantly reduce unaccounted expenditures and promote fiscal responsibility, enhance accountability, foster a culture of transparency and accountability in public financial management.
He added that President Bola Tinubu will be the distinguished special guest of honour at the conference.
