Michael Igbinedion initiated into Okada elders’ council

The Son of Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Michael Igbinedion, has been inducted into the Edion (Elders’ Council) of Okada, Ovia North East, Edo, alongside 53 others.
The Edion is a revered council that chooses the Odionwere, head of the community, based on seniority and cultural traditions.
The initiation marked a return of the revered tradition to Okada, a ceremony not held in nearly three decades.
According to Pa Samson Idehen, the Odionwere of Okada, joining the Edion is an honour reserved for respected individuals with integrity and community service records.
”The Elders’ Council plays a crucial role in safeguarding tradition, mentoring younger generations, and transmitting ancestral wisdom and community values.
”Michael Igbinedion’s initiation is a testament to his contributions to Okada’s progress and his commitment to upholding communal values.
“The Edion initiation marked a return of the revered tradition to Okada, a ceremony not held in nearly three decades, ” he said.
Michael Igbinedion, Chairman of Wantan Group, GHPP Konsult, GO H2O Water, and Serendip Oil & Gas, is known for promoting Edo traditions.
His initiation reflects his maturity and contributions to Okada’s progress through leadership, philanthropy, and upholding communal values.
”This initiation marks a milestone in the journey of my life, and I promise to join hands with the elders of the community to preserve the aged-long tradition and custom of the people.
“I am honoured to be part of the Edion council, and I will work to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Benin Kingdom, ” he said.
The Benin society regards age grades as key institutions, organising individuals within specific brackets for shared duties, leadership grooming, and cultural preservation.
The Edion initiation is a significant cultural event that highlights the importance of tradition and community values in the Benin Kingdom.
