WABMA celebrates 100th edition of fake news debunker series

The West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy (WABMA) is set to celebrate the 100th edition of its Fake News Debunker series..
A statement signed by WABMA Registrar,  Joseph Obari, Esq, said the programme is aimed at promoting fact-checking and media literacy in West Africa.
The statement said the event with the themed: “The Future of Fact-Checking in African Media,” would feature a keynote address by renowned media expert Dr Tope Ojeme and a panel discussion with industry professionals, academics, and policy influencers.
It also stated that as part of the celebration, WABMA would graduate 50 successful participants from its fake news debunker series.
It added that the programme which started in April 2022, has become a reference point for news consumers in Nigeria and beyond.
”WABMA has also launched the DebunkIt Challenge, a competition that encourages students, young journalists, and media enthusiasts to produce one-minute fact-checking video productions.
”A panel of seasoned professionals will evaluate the entries and select the best three competitors, who will be rewarded during the graduation ceremony.
”Dr Ken Okere, Rector of WABMA, said, “The WABMA Fake News Debunker series has come to be a reference point for news consumers in Nigeria and beyond.
”We aim to inspire a new generation of fact-checkers and ethical communicators.”
”In an era of widespread misinformation, WABMA’s fake news debunker series is crucial in promoting media literacy and accurate news reporting.
The academy’s efforts aimed to deepen commitment to fact-checking and verification in the media industry, ” the statement read.
