Lagos State cracks down on environmental offenders

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has announced strict penalties for environmental offenders, effective July 1, 2025.
According to Commissioner in charge of the MinistryTokunbo Wahab, individuals who dump refuse illegally, litter streets, or deface the environment will face fines of up to N250,000 or three months in jail.
Wahab, who disclosed this on the government’s official X handle on Wednesday, said Lagos would no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse.
“During the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources media briefing yesterday, we made it clear that Lagos will no longer tolerate deliberate environmental abuse.
“From July 1, full enforcement of the ban on single use plastics begins.
”Offenders who dump refuse illegally, litter the streets, or deface our environment will face stiff penalties, up to N250,000 fine or three months in jail.
“We’ve arrested over 3,000 offenders and counting, and we’re ramping up surveillance and advocacy,” he said.
He reiterated that the law on cart pushers still stands, public defecation remains banned, and illegal street trading will not be tolerated.

The commissioner urges Lagos residents to take responsibility for protecting their environment, emphasising the need for collective action to maintain a clean and healthy city.
Residents were also encouraged to report environmental infractions and inactive PSP operators to LAWMA’s helpline channels.
