Tribunal upholds Aiyedatiwa’s election as Ondo State Governor

The Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed multiple petitions challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the November 16, 2024, polls.
In a judgement delivered on Wednesday and lasting over eight hours, the three-member tribunal, chaired by Justice Benson Ogubu, struck out the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Agboola Ajayi.
The PDP candidate in his petition had alleged widespread irregularities and called for the cancellation of the election results.
The tribunal struck out petitions filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Agboola Ajayi, as well as those brought by the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and African Alliance (AA).
The petitioners alleged widespread irregularities and sought to cancel the election results, but the tribunal found no merit in their claims.
Aiyedatiwa, who ran under the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured victory in all 18 local government areas, polling a total of 366,781 votes to defeat his closest challengers.
The tribunal’s judgement effectively bought an end to the legal disputes surrounding the 2024 governorship election, affirming Aiyedatiwa’s mandate as the governor of Ondo State.
With this ruling, Aiyedatiwa can continue to serve out his term, having been declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
