Lagos Govt pledges support for music industry, says culture can rebuild nation

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, has expressed his full support for this year’s COSON Week, a celebration of music and creativity in Nigeria.
The governor spoke at the Society’s Greenball, which marked the end of the week-long activities, and praised the theme “Nigeria Will Rise Again” as a powerful message of hope and unity.
Sanwo-Olu commended Chief Tony Okoroji, Chairman of COSON, for his exceptional leadership and lifelong commitment to protecting intellectual property and promoting Nigerian musicians.
He highlighted COSON’s achievements, including the launch of Nigeria’s first online music licensing platform, CLAP, and the distribution of hundreds of millions of naira in royalties to musicians.
The governor emphasised the importance of collaboration between culture and governance in shaping Nigeria’s national destiny.
He noted that COSON’s work served as a model for collective management societies across Africa, demonstrating transparency and innovation in the music industry.
Sanwo-Olu urged stakeholders to recommit to building a Nigeria that values its creators, upholds justice, and thrives on the strength of its culture.
He congratulated the COSON family on another successful COSON Week and praised the Green Ball as a symbol of resilience and unity.
Lagos State, as the hub of Nigeria’s creative economy, sees COSON as a vital partner in developing the sector.
The government had invested in digital infrastructure, talent incubation, and performance spaces to empower artists, strengthen copyright enforcement, and foster innovation.
