NGF meets in Abuja over rising insecurity

Governors from all 36 states in Nigeria on Wednesday gathered for an emergency meeting at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) secretariat in Abuja to discuss pressing national security issues.
The meeting, attended by state governors and deputy governors, coincides with heightened insecurity across the country, prompting calls for coordinated action between federal and state authorities.
The presence of National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru indicates that security issues were a top priority.
The emergency session comes at a time of heightened insecurity in several parts of the country, with increasing calls for both federal and state authorities to take coordinated action.
Meanwhile, amidst the growing security concerns in the country, the Progressive Governors’ Forum has thrown its weight behind President Bola Tinubu to address the nation’s security challenges.
Addressing journalists in Abuja after a three-hour meeting held behind closed doors, the Chairman of the forum and governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the governors were equally considering the issue of state police in line with the proposal of Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State.
Uzodinma noted that the forum backed President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address security challenges.
He noted that state police could be a viable solution, aligning with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s proposal.
Alia advocated for establishing state police, citing potential benefits in addressing insecurity.
He suggests the federal government set clear guidelines to prevent misuse.
In a previous meeting, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum set up a sub-committee to partner with security agencies to address security challenges.
The forum also discussed national minimum wage negotiations and potential fiscal policy reforms.
