Atletico Madrid crashes out of Club World Cup despite win over Botafogo

Botafogo, the Brazilian side, has booked their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup despite a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.
The Spaniards, who needed a big win to advance, were ultimately eliminated due to goal difference.
Atletico Madrid won the match 1-0, with Antoine Griezmann scoring the only goal in the 87th minutes.
Despite the defeat, Botafogo finished the group stage in second place with six points, behind Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference.
Atletico Madrid also finished with six points but missed out on goal difference behind Botafogo.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone expressed frustration that his team didn’t qualify, despite winning two games and earning six points.
“We’re frustrated that we didn’t qualify, we were punished because it wasn’t enough,” he said.
Simeone also praised his team’s effort, saying, “I’m proud of the work of my guys. We played our hearts out; we won two games but unfortunately we are not going through.”
Atletico thought they had won a penalty in the first half, but the VAR review revealed a foul on Botafogo’s Alexander Barboza in the build-up, and no penalty was given.
Griezmann scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, but it was too little, too late for Atletico to advance.
