Shell’s Osagie Okunbor set to retire after decades of service

Shell Companies Nigeria Country Chair, Osagie Okunbor, is set to retire this month after 39 years of service.
The announcement was made by Mrs. Gladys Afam-Anadu, Communications Manager of the company, in a statement on Wednesday.
According to Afam-Anadu, a pre-retirement event for Okunbor commenced on Tuesday in Abuja, where stakeholders in the oil and gas industry praised his contributions to the industry’s development, particularly in Nigerian content and Shell’s investments in Deep-water and Integrated Gas.
Mr Marno de Jong, Executive Vice President, Nigeria, described Okunbor as a respected leader in Shell and the broader industry, whose wise counsel and insights have been invaluable.
“We will all miss his presence, and we wish him a most enjoyable retirement,” de Jong added.
Okunbor, in his remarks, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nigeria on a global platform offered by Shell.
“It has been an honour of a lifetime serving Nigeria… Shell values of honesty, integrity, and respect for people have been useful in my modest contributions,” he said.
A graduate of the University of Benin, Okunbor joined Shell in 1986 and has served in various roles, including Managing Director of the defunct Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and Country Chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria.
Okunbor has received several honours for his contributions to the Nigerian energy industry, including the Dr. Alirio Parra Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
Meanwhile, Marno de Jong would take on the additional responsibilities of Country Chair, Shell Companies Nigeria, following Okunbor’s retirement.
