Jareb private school dominates ecobank chess championship

Victor Ajayi of Jareb Private School has emerged as the gold medalist in the ongoing Ecobank School Teams Chess Championship.
Ajayi scored six straight wins across all six rounds in the tournament, showcasing exceptional strategy and composure.

His schoolmates, Joba Fadojutimi and Daniel Ibrahim, won silver and bronze medals respectively for Jareb Private School.

In a fiercely contested event, Ajayi showed exceptional strategy and composure, rising above his peers to claim the tournament’s top prize.

Reacting to his victory,Ajayi said he felt excited to win the gold medal for his school.

“My dedication to chess and strategic thinking paid off. I’m grateful for the chance to show my skills,” he said.

He recalled his disappointment in the first edition where he placed eighth, adding that it fuelled his drive to do better this year.

“This win is a big step forward. It inspires me to keep working hard and improve to compete at international level,” he added.

Coach Oluwatobiloba Alabi of Jareb School expressed appreciation to Ecobank for providing a stage for young chess talents.

“I’m proud of my players’ performance. Winning all the medals shows their hard work and commitment to the game,” Alabi said.

He noted that the win would strengthen the students’ confidence and encourage them to aim higher in future competitions.

Adeyinka Adewale, Ecobank Vice President, praised the players’ display of strategy, skill and determination at the tournament.

He said, “This event showcases the brilliance, critical thinking and focus of our young players.

“To all the winners, I offer my warmest congratulations. Your success reflects your dedication and perseverance.”

He encouraged all participants to keep nurturing their love for chess as it builds mental strength and problem-solving skills.

Adewale urged schools and communities to support chess, seeing its value in shaping future leaders’ minds and characters.
