The 2025 Nestlé Milo Secondary School Basketball Championship has concluded with thrilling victories for Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, in the boys’ category, and Government Secondary School, Abuja, in the girls’ category.
Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, emerged champions after a nail-biting 66-64 win over Bishop Dimieari Grammar School, Bayelsa.
The match was a closely contested one, with Bayelsa dominating the first quarter 20-14, but Niger boys fought back to take control in the second and third quarters.
The game went into overtime, where Niger’s sharp shooting and crucial free throws sealed their victory.
For the girls category, government Secondary School, Abuja, claimed the top spot after defeating Lanre Leke Academy, Osun, 55-42.
Despite losing to Osun in the group stage, the Abuja girls showed remarkable determination and skill to take home the trophy.
Dike Victoria (Government Secondary School, Abuja) and Samuel Levi (Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State) won the most valuable player awards in their respective categories.
Niger boys and Abuja girls each received N3 million and Nestlé Milo gifts, while the runners-up took home N2 million and consolation prizes.
Emmanuel Tanko (Niger Coach), said “We are very happy with the win. It was tough, knowing our opponents and how difficult the national finals can be.
”We appreciate the organisers for supporting grassroots basketball and helping grow young talent nationwide.
”As a player, I competed in 2004 and 2005 editions but failed to reach the finals. I worked hard to achieve as a coach what I could not as a player.”
Rosemary Thompson (Abuja Coach), said, “It’s a great victory for us. We worked hard despite losing to this team earlier in the tournament. It’s truly joyful.
”We thank the organisers for shaping young lives through grassroots sport.”
The 25th edition of the championship saw over 30,000 schools nationwide participating, with 12 teams competing in the final stage at the Indoor Sports Hall, National Stadium, Surulere, from June 21 to 26.
