Akume remains SGF, presidency debunks replacement rumors

The Presidency has denied reports that former Benue State Governor George Akume has stepped down as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to become the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement on Saturday, Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga said, “There has been no change in the status” of Akume, adding that President Bola Tinubu has not made any new appointments.
There have been reports that Akume stepped down as SGF to become the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“President Bola Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.
“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue,” he said.
Recall that former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje resigned as APC National Chairman on June 27, 2025, citing urgent and important personal matters.
There are speculations that Ganduje’s resignation may be due to increasing resistance from within the party, particularly from those who viewed his appointment as a violation of the party’s internal zoning arrangements.
Ali Bukar Dalori, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), will take over as Acting National Chairman pending the meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) to fill the vacancy.
Ganduje assumed leadership of the APC in August 2023, following the resignation of his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu.
The APC has internal zoning arrangements that dictate the rotation of leadership positions among the six geopolitical zones.
Ganduje’s resignation and the appointment of an acting national chairman may impact the party’s stability and preparations for upcoming elections.
The APC needs to fill the leadership vacuum created by Ganduje’s resignation to ensure the party’s continued effectiveness.
The APC’s National Executive Committee will meet soon to fill the vacancy created by Ganduje’s resignation and determine the party’s next steps
