Super Falcons secure quarterfinal spot with 1-0 win over Botswana

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging past Botswana 1-0 in a tightly contested match.
Chinwendu Ihezuo’s late strike in the 88th minute proved to be the decisive factor, as she latched onto a loose ball in the opponent’s box to seal the victory for Nigeria.
Coach Justin Madugu introduced Esther Okoronkwo and Chinwendu Ihezuo in the second half to inject fresh energy into the team.
This move paid off, as Ihezuo’s goal broke the deadlock and secured the win for Nigeria.
The Mares put up a strong defensive display, with goalkeeper Sedilame Boseja making several crucial saves to deny the Super Falcons.
Despite dominating possession, Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut chances, especially in the first half.
Both Okoronkwo and Ashleigh Plumptre had chances to score in the second half, but Boseja’s goalkeeping skills denied them.
Botswana’s own opportunities were limited, but they threatened Nigeria’s goal on a few occasions.
With six points from two matches, Nigeria has guaranteed a spot in the quarterfinals, regardless of the outcome of their final group match against Algeria.
This win will likely give the Super Falcons a significant confidence boost as they aim to reclaim the WAFCON title last won in 2018.
The Super Falcons will receive at least $200,000 in prize money for reaching the quarterfinals, with potential for more if they progress further in the tournament.
Nigeria will face Algeria in their last group match on Sunday, July 13. This match will determine the final standings in Group B.
If the Super Falcons reach the semifinals but finish third, they will earn an additional $150,000.
If they reach the final and finish as runners-up, their prize money will increase to $500,000.
