World’s oldest marathon runner Fauja Singh dies in road accident at 114

Fauja Singh, known as the “Turbaned Tornado,” has passed away at the age of 114 in a road accident in Punjab’s Jalandhar district.

Despite not having official recognition from Guinness World Records due to the lack of a birth certificate, Singh’s family claims he was born on April 1, 1911.
Singh continued running full marathons until the age of 100, with his last race being a 10-kilometer event at the 2013 Hong Kong Marathon at 101 years old, where he finished in 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 28 seconds.
Singh’s running career began at 89 after the loss of his wife and son, inspired by watching marathons on television.
He carried the Olympic torch at the 2004 Athens and 2012 London Olympics.
Singh appeared in advertisements with sports icons like David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Singh on social media, praising his determination and impact on promoting fitness among the youth.
Singh’s biographer, Khushwant Singh, expressed his sorrow, calling him “My Turbaned Tornado” and stating, “He was struck by an unidentified vehicle… in his village, Bias, while crossing the road. Rest in peace, my dear Fauja.”
Singh’s remarkable story and achievements served as an inspiration to people worldwide, showcasing the importance of staying active and pursuing one’s passions, regardless of age.
