Atiku Abubakar resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect, citing irreconcilable differences within the party.
In a letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman, Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, Atiku expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had while serving in the party.
He said that he found it necessary to part ways with the PDP due to the party’s current trajectory, which he believed diverged from its foundational principles.
He noted that serving as Vice President and presidential candidate twice was a significant chapter in his life, but he could no longer continue in a party that no longer aligned with his values.
Atiku has a history of leaving and rejoining the PDP.
He first left the party in 2007 to contest for the presidency under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and later returned to the PDP in 2010.
He again left the PDP in 2013 to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and supported Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential bid.
Atiku returned to the PDP in 2017 and ran for president under the party’s platform in 2019 and 2023.
Atiku’s resignation may be linked to his plans for the 2027 general elections.
He has formed a coalition with other top opposition figures, including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Nasir El-Rufai, aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu.
The coalition has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform.
The ADC has appointed a former Senate President, David Mark, as its interim national chairman, and a former governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, as the interim national secretary.
