Senate plans security summit to address food production, livelihood challenges

The National Assembly (NASS) is planning to convene a national security summit to address the rising insecurity threatening lives, property, and food production across Nigeria.
Senator Garba Maidoki, a member of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Production and Rural Development, disclosed this at a Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting on the 2026 Agriculture Budget, organised by ActionAid Nigeria (AAN), German International Cooperation (GIZ), Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, amongst others.
The meeting aimed to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of key agricultural frameworks and review how these frameworks support the achievement of national and continental agricultural goals.
According to Senator Maidoki, the summit will bring together security agencies, policymakers, and members of the public to develop a new security blueprint.
Maidoki said that the summit which is scheduled to hold in Lagos in the coming months, would serve as a platform for expert contributions and public input.
The senator also disclosed that public hearings would be held in all zones, including Lagos, to collect inputs from Nigerians.
Accordingtothelawmaker, ”The thoughts and solutions derived from the summit will be handed over to security chiefs for implementation.”
“The security summit aimed at developing a new security architecture that would address the yearnings of Nigerians, promote peace, and boost the fight against insecurity, especially as it affects food production and rural livelihoods”, he added.
Maidoki further said, “The summit would allow Nigerians to suggest practical solutions, which would form the basis of actions by the security chiefs.
“The Senate decry the growing insecurity across the country, which has led to widespread loss of lives, displacement, destruction of farmlands, and worsening food insecurity.
“Failure to prioritise these challenges would deny Nigerians access to food, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods,” he warned.
