Dele Momodu dumps PDP, joins ADC over alleged anti-democratic hijack

The publisher of Ovation Magazine, Bashorun Dele Momodu, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
In a letter dated July 17, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward 4 Chairman in Ihievbe, Owan East Local Government Area of Edo State, Bashorun Momodu cited the party’s hijack by “anti-democratic forces” as the reason for his departure.
Momodu stated thus, “I wish to inform you of my decision to resign from our political party, PDP, with immediate effect.
“My reason is simple and straightforward. Our party has been unarguably hijacked by antidemocratic forces, from within and outside, in broad daylight.
“It is, therefore, honourable to abandon the carcass of the party to them while the majority of us earnestly sign up with the new coalition party known as the African Democratic Congress (ADC)”, he added
Momodu expressed his disillusionment with the PDP’s current state, saying that the party has been taken over by forces that undermined internal democracy.
He said it was honourable to abandon the party to the forces while like minded individuals join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a new coalition party aiming to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
Momodu alleged that the PDP has been taken over by forces that don’t believe in democracy.
He criticised the party’s internal dynamics, which he believed has strayed from its foundational principles.
Momodu accused the APC of sending moles to opposition parties to weaken them, citing Minister Nyesom Wike as an example.
Momodu’s defection is seen as a significant boost to the ADC, which aimed to present a strong opposition to the APC in the 2027 elections.
His experience and influence in media and politics are expected to attract reform-minded politicians and supporters to the party.
Momodu’s joining the ADC is expected to strengthen the party’s profile and attract more supporters.
The ADC’s ability to attract influential politicians like Momodu could lead to a broader coalition challenging the dominance of the PDP and APC.
Momodu’s resignation and defection may signal a larger realignment of political forces in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections.
