Nationwide Alert: NCDC warns of ongoing outbreaks of Cholera, Mpox, other diseases

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a nationwide alert due to the outbreak of multiple infectious diseases across the country.
Suspected cases have been reported in 34 states, with Zamfara State accounting for 32 per cent of the total cases as of epidemiological week 26 (June 23-29, 2025).
Other affected states include Bayelsa, Adamawa, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers. Cholera, caused by Vibrio cholerae, can lead to severe diarrhea, dehydration, and death if left untreated.
A dengue fever outbreak was confirmed in Edo State between June 9 and 13, following laboratory investigations.
Dengue fever is spread by Aedes mosquitoes and is fueled by poor sanitation and climate-related conditions.
Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, and joint pain, which can be similar to malaria.
Seven cases of yellow fever have been confirmed across six states: Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Rivers.
The NCDC emphasised that the yellow fever vaccine was the most effective prevention strategy.
The viral disease causes fever, skin rashes, and swollen lymph nodes.
To curb the spread of these diseases, the NCDC recommends eliminating mosquito breeding sites, getting rid of stagnant water around homes to prevent mosquito breeding.
NCDC also recommended the use of insecticide-treated nets to prevent mosquito bites, applying repellents to prevent bites as well as maintaining hygiene among others.
The NCDC warned that the outbreaks posed significant public health risks, requiring immediate national attention and coordinated response efforts.
The agency emphasised the need for heightened vigilance and intensified response efforts from all stakeholders to prevent further loss of lives.
