LP senators demand apology from Edo Gov over remark on Peter Obi

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the Senate has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State to apologise to Nigerians over a recent remark that has sparked widespread criticism.
In a statement signed by Senators Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Ezea Okey, and Tony Nwoye, the lawmakers described Okpebholo’s comment as “executive rascality and abuse of office.”
Governor Okpebholo had warned Peter Obi, the LP presidential candidate, against visiting Edo State without security clearance.
He claimed that Obi’s last visit to the state resulted in violence, with three person’s killed.
Okpebholo’s statement was made at a public event on Friday, where he said, “That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped N15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance.”
The LP senators strongly condemned Okpebholo’s remark, describing it as a threat to Obi’s life, freedom of movement, and personal security.
They cited Section 41(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, which guarantees every Nigerian’s right to freedom of movement.
The senators emphasised that Obi, as a citizen of Nigeria, deserves protection and support from the law and all who share the vision for a better Nigeria.
The LP senators urged Okpebholo to withdraw his statement and tender an unreserved apology to all Nigerians for violating the Nigerian Constitution, which he swore to uphold.
They also called on the Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services to take note of the threat and ensure that Obi’s rights are protected.
The controversy surrounding Okpebholo’s remark highlighted the importance of respecting the rule of law and the rights of citizens.
The senators’ reaction emphasised the need for public officers to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine the peace and harmony of the country.
