N1.038bn refunded to passengers by domestic airlines says NCAA

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has revealed that domestic airlines in Nigeria refunded over one billion to 5,285 passengers in the second quarter of this year.
The data, released in a post on the NCAA’s official X account, showed that a total of N1.038 billion was refunded to passengers between April and June 2025.
The disclosure highlighted the NCAA’s ongoing efforts to ensure that airlines comply with passenger protection obligations.
The Authority has been working to protect the rights of air passengers and ensure that airlines adhere to the regulations governing flight cancellations and refunds.
According to the NCAA, a cancelled flight does not automatically entitle passengers to refunds or compensation.
”Rather, specific conditions outlined in Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations, particularly Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023, govern these outcomes, “”
The Authority emphasised that passengers were entitled to refunds or compensation only if they have submitted a formal complaint to the airline and the issue has not been resolved satisfactorily.
The NCAA provided guidelines for passengers who have experienced flight cancellations or disruptions. These include:
”If an airline provides a cancellation notice at least 24 hours before departure, passengers are not expected to report to the airport, and the airline is not obligated to offer further assistance.
”When notification is not provided within the 24-hour window, and a passenger shows up at the airport, the airline is required to provide care and assistance, including refreshments, hotel accommodation (where applicable), rerouting, rebooking on another carrier, or financial compensation.
”Passengers who have experienced flight cancellations or disruptions are encouraged to file formal complaints with the airline and, if necessary, escalate the case to the NCAA through its official reporting channels, ” the statement said.
The NCAA emphasised the importance of air travellers understanding their rights and responsibilities when facing flight disruptions.
Passengers were encouraged to study Nigeria’s civil aviation regulations to better understand the conditions governing refunds and compensation.
