Southern Taiwan hit by widespread flooding, school closures

Torrential rains have pummeled southern Taiwan for the second consecutive day, causing widespread flooding, school closures, and the evacuation of nearly 3,000 residents. Nine people have been injured so far.
The heavy downpour, triggered by a lingering low-pressure system, has submerged streets and buildings across multiple towns and villages, with authorities reporting 88 rescue operations in inundated homes and vehicles.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) has warned of sustained heavy rainfall, particularly in mountainous areas, forecasting up to 90 centimeters (35.4 inches) of rain in the coming days.
The agency cautioned that the intense rainfall could trigger additional flash floods and landslides, emphasising the need for residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
Flooding has affected several towns and villages, with television footage showing residents wading through waist-deep water in Chiayi County.
Local authorities have activated emergency response protocols, assessing damage and providing emergency relief.
The southern city of Tainan, one of the hardest-hit areas, has seen dozens of people evacuated from homes weakened or damaged by Typhoon Danas.
Taiwan is still reeling from the impact of Typhoon Danas, which recently struck the island’s densely populated western coast, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, including the national power grid, and leaving homes in ruins.
Local authorities continue to work on assessing damage and providing emergency relief, bracing for further disruptions in the wake of back-to-back extreme weather events.
