Ndokwa Neku Union rejects Anioma State in South-East zone

The Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) has rejected the outcome of a public hearing held on July 4, 2025, held in the South-South region, on the creation of Anioma State, describing it as a “sham” process that disregarded the views of the Ndokwa people.
This is contained in a statement issued by the President General of NNU, Chief Amechi Asugwuni, on behalf of the Executive Council of NNU.
The NNU, which represents the Ukwuani and Ndosumili ethnic groups in Delta North, insisted that any new state must remain within the South-South geopolitical zone.
The statement noted that NNU vehemently opposed the inclusion of Ndokwa people in an Anioma State located in the South-East geopolitical zone, citing historical and cultural ties to the South-South zone.
It also said that NNU supports the creation of Anioma State, but only if it remained within the South-South zone, aligning with the people’s historical and political identity.
”Anioma State is welcome, but only within the South-South Geopolitical Zone.
”We urge the distinguished members of the Senate Committee to hear and respect this
authorised and approved by NNU that under no circumstances will our people be moved into the South-East region, ” the statement said.
”This position reflects extensive consultations across all our communities, elders, we emphatically distance and reject in its entirety of the outcome of the said sham public hearing.
”It may interest the general public to note that Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) delegate were not allowed to speak at the purported public hearing at Uyo, implying
no regard to the opinion and expressions of the masses, ”NNU further stated.
The NNU warned against any individual or group attempting to speak or act against the collective will of the Ndokwa people, emphasising that only the NNU was authorised to represent their interests.
It reads inter alia, “We stand on NNU declaration. Our nation will never be part of any state in Southeast, but will happily align with any state in South-south.
”Our nation is oblivious to the content of the bill sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko for creation of Anioma State in Southeast”, further stressed.
The NNU also demanded the division of its current local government areas (Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, and Ukwuani) into nine LGAs to address historical marginalisation and ensure fair representation.
The NNU’s position reflected the collective desire of the Ukwuani and Ndosumili people to maintain their cultural and historical identity within the South-South zone.
