MKO Abiola’s wife, Doyin, dies at 82

Her Excellency, Dr. Doyin Abiola, a trailblazing Nigerian journalist and media icon, has passed away at the age of 82.
She was the wife of the late former President, Chief MKO Abiola, GCFR, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election.
Dr. Abiola died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 9:15 p.m. after a brief illness.
Dr. Abiola was the first Nigerian woman to become the editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper, leading the Concord Group of newspapers.
She had a distinguished career spanning over three decades, serving in various capacities, including reporter, features writer, and group features editor at prominent newspapers like Daily Sketch and Daily Times.
Dr. Abiola received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) for her outstanding contributions to journalism and democracy in Nigeria.
She chaired the awards nominating panel at the first Nigerian Media Merit Award (NMMA) and sat on the advisory council of the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ogun State University.
President Bola Tinubu, described her as an “Amazon and an icon in Nigerian journalism” and a “soldier of democracy,” praising her contributions to journalism and gender equity.
Also, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, mourned Dr. Abiola’s passing, highlighting her impact on Nigeria’s media landscape and her role as a trailblazer for women in journalism.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, also expressed deep sadness over Dr. Abiola’s demise, acknowledging her dedication to justice, democracy, and the betterment of her country.
