Tinubu orders pension increase, free healthcare for retirees

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
President Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday after receiving a briefing from Ms Omolola Oloworaran, Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
Tinubu emphasised that the initiative iwas crucial for ensuring dignity and social protection in retirement.
The President also ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and the establishment of a minimum pension guarantee to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners.
The President mandated PenCom to urgently resolve the longstanding police pension issue, emphasising that police officers deserved to retire with dignity and peace of mind.
”I have directed that the free healthcare access initiative for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme be expedited because it is a critical component of social protection and dignity in retirement.
”I have also called for the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee, which would provide a safety net for the most vulnerable pensioners under the CPS, ” he said.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive growth and protection for ordinary Nigerians, particularly retirees and low-income earners.
Earlier, Ms Oloworaran briefed the President on ongoing efforts to ensure the value of pension fund assets was preserved despite inflation and macroeconomic pressures.
She outlined plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to enable Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
“We have been working to ensure the value preservation of pension fund assets in the face of inflation and macroeconomic pressures,.
