Former Abia deputy governor quits PDP

Former Deputy Governor of Abia State under Governor Okezie Ikpeazu from May 2015 to May 2023, Ude Chukwu, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
His resignation letter, dated August 5, 2025, cited “personal reasons” for his decision to leave the party effective immediately.
In his letter addressed to the Chairman of Ndi Elu Ward, Nkporo, Ohafia Local Government Area, Chukwu expressed gratitude to the PDP for its support over the years and wished the party well in its future endeavors.
He said, “I write to inform you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective immediately.
”You may wish to note that I am resigning due to personal reasons. While it was a difficult decision to make, it is the best course of action for me at this time”, he added.
Chukwu’s resignation followed his visit to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.
Although reports vary on whether Chukwu said that Otti had earned himself re-election in 2027, it is confirmed that he praised Otti’s performance.
After the visit, Chukwu was reportedly removed from all Abia PDP stakeholders’ groups in the state.
Chukwu’s departure from the PDP may have significant implications for the party’s strength in Abia North, given his influential position and grassroots mobilization skills.
There are also speculations that he might join the Labour Party, which could potentially shift the political landscape in the state.
Reacting, the PDP Acting Chairman, Abraham Amah, criticised Chukwu’s move, describing it as “a survivalist instinct dressed in borrowed robes of loyalty.”
Amah accused Chukwu of trying to reposition himself politically and urged him to acknowledge the PDP’s role in his political career.
