8 killed, over 800 farmlands ravaged in Ebonyi flood disaster

A devastating flood disaster has struck the Kpoghirikpo community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claiming eight lives and displacing thousands of residents.
The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall, affected over 800 farmlands and 3,000 households, creating a major displacement crisis within the community.
 Eight people have lost their lives, including a mother and her four children. Four bodies have been recovered and buried, while search efforts continue for those still missing.
Over 800 farmlands have been destroyed, and 3,000 households rendered homeless, dealing a severe blow to the local economy and livelihoods of residents.
A search and rescue team from the community managed to rescue four children alive, while the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has dispatched an emergency response team to the community for immediate intervention and rescue.
Responding to the flood incident, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Ann Aligwe, said an emergency response team from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has been dispatched to the community for immediate intervention and rescue.
She added that the State government had made provisions for relief materials to cushion the effect of the disaster on affected victims.
She advised people living in low-lying, flood-prone zones to relocate to safer locations provided by the government as the rains continue.
The flood has created a major displacement crisis, with thousands of residents forced to flee their homes.
The destruction of farmlands and homes has dealt a severe blow to the local economy, leaving many residents without livelihoods or shelter.
The community has called on the federal and state governments for intervention and relief materials to help displaced families and address widespread destruction.
