Trump, Zelensky express hope for trilateral talks with Putin

U.S. President, Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the White House on August 18, 2025, for high-stakes talks aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
The meeting included European leaders and focused on security guarantees for Ukraine and potential peace deals.
Trump emphasised that the U.S. would play a coordinating role alongside European nations in providing security guarantees for Ukraine.
European leaders supported a NATO-like security presence, but Trump stopped short of committing US troops.
Trump expressed optimism about achieving peace, saying there’s a “good chance” of ending the conflict.
He discloses plans to talk to Putin and hopes for a three-way meeting with Putin and Zelenskyy.
“I think if everything works out well today we’ll have a trilat, and I think there will be a reasonable chance of ending the war when we do that,” said Trump, sitting in the Oval alongside Zelensky
Trump mentioned possible territorial exchanges between Russia and Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has consistently rejected such concessions.
Trump and Zelenskyy expressed hope for trilateral talks with Putin, which could lead to a peaceful resolution.
Zelensky, who came backed by a phalanx of top European leaders, praised Trump.
“Thank you very much for your efforts, personal efforts to stop killings and stop this war,” he said.
European leaders, including the UK’s Keir Starmer, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and Germany’s Friedrich Merz, attended the meeting to show support for Ukraine and prevent Kyiv from being isolated in negotiations.
The meeting’s outcome remained uncertain, with potential to reshape the future of Ukraine and beyond.
The White House meetings marked a significant early step toward peace, with Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff coordinating next steps.
