Benue Assembly speaker Dajoh resigns, Berger elected new speaker

The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, has resigned from his position, effective August 24, 2025.
Rt. Hon. Dajoh’s resignation is contained in a letter he personally signed, dated August 24, 2025, and made available to journalists on Sunday.
In a letter addressed to the Clerk of the House, Dajoh said that his resignation was done “in good faith and in the best interest of the state.”
He alsp expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Speaker and pledged to remain committed to his duties as a legislator representing Gboko West State Constituency.
Following Dajoh’s resignation, the Benue State Assembly held an emergency plenary session to elect a new Speaker.
Rt. Hon. Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North, was elected as the new Speaker after the House lifted the suspension imposed on him and three other lawmakers on Friday.
The four lawmakers, including Berger, were suspended for six months over an alleged plot to impeach Dajoh.
However, the House lifted the suspension to facilitate Berger’s election as Speaker.
Berger in his acceptance speech, pledged to work with Dajoh and the lawmakers to pursue the development agenda of the state.
Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia had denied any involvement in the alleged move to impeach Dajoh.
In a statement, Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, said the Governor was not aware of any purported attempt to remove the Speaker and reaffirmed his commitment to a cordial working relationship with the Assembly.
