Niger Delta youths protest at NNPCL Towers in Abuja

A group of Niger Delta youth leaders staged a protest at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Towers in Abuja on Wednesday, August 27, 2025.
The protesters arrived at the towers around 6 am, blocking the entrance and exit gates, and carried banners with inscriptions demanding the resignation of NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Ojulari, over alleged corruption and mismanagement.
The protesters called for Engr. Ojulari’s resignation, citing allegations of corruption and mismanagement, just as they demanded the appointment of an indigene of the Niger Delta region as the new GCEO of NNPCL.
The protesters also called for the immediate restart of the Port Harcourt refinery, which has been shut down for a prolonged period.
The group also demanded job opportunities and economic empowerment for the Niger Delta region .
The protest disrupted vehicular traffic on the Herbert Macaulay Way in the Central Business District.
Security agents, including men of the Nigeria Police Force, were deployed to the scene to ensure the protest remained peaceful and to divert traffic.
Workers were forced to park their cars far away from the gates of the Towers due to the protest.
After an appeal by a representative of the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the protesters cleared the highway and massed at the exit gate of the Towers.
The protesters warned that if their demands were not met within seven days, they would take decisive mass action, which might have far-reaching consequences for the peace and stability of the region.
