Adeyanju questions Obi’s democratic credentials

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has declared that he would vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election if the opposition coalition, led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), decided to field Peter Obi as its candidate.
Adeyanju made this statement on Friday, on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, dismissing suggestions that his criticisms of Obi were attempts to discredit the former Anambra governor.
“God forbid that I support APC. If the opposition presents Peter Obi, I will vote for Tinubu,” he said.
Adeyanju cited Obi’s alleged promotion of a toxic political culture, particularly through the behaviour of some “Obidient” supporters online.
He expressed concerns about Obi’s inability to tolerate criticism and his followers’ tendegncy to label dissenters as enemies of Nigeria or accuse them of being paid off.
He said, “We cannot have a man who leads a mob that terrorises people online and cannot tolerate criticism, who calls people all sorts of names.
”Anybody who cannot support their candidate is seen as an enemy of Nigeria or has been paid to do so. That is not democracy”, he added
Adeyanju also questioned Obi’s democratic credentials, arguing that the Labour Party leader has not made sacrifices comparable to those of other Nigerians who fought for the country’s democratic survival.
“What sacrifices has he made for democracy? Many of us have put our lives on the line at great personal cost,” Adeyanju said.
The disagreement between Adeyanju and Obi has escalated into a legal matter, with Obi’s lawyers threatening to sue Adeyanju for alleged defamatory comments on social media and in interviews.
However, Adeyanju has dismissed the lawsuit threat, expressing eagerness to face Obi in court.
Reflecting on his past choices at the polls, Adeyanju insisted that he has always voted based on principle, supporting credible candidates like Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999 and Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and 2015.
