CHAN 2024: Morocco edges Madagascar 3-2 to win historic 3rd title

Morocco has made history by winning a record third African Nations Championship (CHAN) title, defeating Madagascar 3-2 in a nail-biting final match at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi on Saturday, August 30, 2025.
Oussama Lamlioui’s late strike sealed the victory for the Atlas Lions, who came from behind to win the match.
Madagascar took the lead in the 9th minute with Felicite Manohatsoa’s stunning long-range strike.
Youssef Mehri equalised for Morocco in the 27th minute, breaking clear of the Malagasy defense.
Lamlioui put Morocco ahead for the first time just before halftime, scoring his fifth goal of the tournament.
Substitute Toky Rakotondraibe drew Madagascar level midway through the second half, scoring his second goal in as many matches.
Lamlioui struck again with 10 minutes remaining, completing his double and securing Morocco’s third CHAN title.
Lamlioui finished as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals, including two in the final match against Madagascar.
His impressive performance earned him the Puma Top Scorer award.
The victory marked another milestone in a successful year for Moroccan football.
The country’s youth sides have also excelled, winning the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations and reaching the final of the Under-20 tournament.
Morocco will receive $3.5 million in prize money for winning the tournament, while Madagascar will take home $1.2 million for finishing as runners-up.
Morocco is also set to host the senior Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 1988, with the tournament scheduled to kick off on December 21.
