Manchester United secured their first win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Burnley at Old Trafford on August 30, 2025.
Bruno Fernandes scored the winning penalty in the 97th minute, saving the Red Devils from a potential draw.
United dominated the game with 62 per cent possession and 26 shots, but Burnley’s defense held strong, forcing United to work hard for the win.
The visitors equalised twice through Lyle Foster and Jaidon Anthony, canceling out United’s goals from Josh Cullen’s own goal and Bryan Mbeumo.
United took the lead in the 27th minute when Casemiro’s header from Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick ricocheted off Cullen and into the net.
Burnley leveled on 55 minutes with Foster scoring from Jacob Bruun Larsen’s pinpoint cross.
United retook the lead just 15 seconds later with Mbeumo scoring from Diogo Dalot’s cross.
Burnley equalised again in the 66th minute when Anthony scored from Loum Tchaouna’s effort that Altay Bayindir parried back into play.
United won a penalty in the 97th minute after VAR spotted Jaidon Anthony’s shirt pull on Amad Diallo. Fernandes scored coolly to seal the win.
The win took United to fourth place with four points from three games, easing the pressure on manager Ruben Amorim ahead of a two-week international break.
Amorim’s future had been in doubt after United’s humiliating 3-0 loss to League Two side Grimsby in the Carabao Cup midweek.
