Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy shot dead in Lviv

A tragic incident unfolded in western Ukraine on Saturday, August 30, 2025, when former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in the city of Lviv.
Parubiy, 54, was a prominent politician who played a significant role in Ukraine’s pro-European protest movements.
The attacker was reportedly dressed as a delivery rider and used an electric bike to escape.
According to the prosecutor general’s office, the gunman fired several shots at Parubiy, killing him on the spot.
Ukrainian authorities have launched a murder investigation and are searching for the shooter.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the killing as a “horrific murder” and vowed to use all necessary forces and means to investigate.
Former President Petro Poroshenko described Parubiy as a “brother-in-arms” and said his murder was “a shot at the heart of Ukraine”.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressed shock at the news, highlighting Parubiy’s role in evacuating Poland’s consulate in Sevastopol during Russia’s takeover of Crimea.
Parubiy was a pivotal figure in Ukraine’s modern democracy, playing leading roles in both the Orange Revolution and the EuroMaidan protests.
He was a strong supporter of Ukraine’s independence and the use of the Ukrainian language.
At the time of his death, Parubiy was still a member of parliament and had served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019.
