NYG 2025: Athletes step up training ahead of athletics events

Athletes participating in the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba are intensifying their training ahead of the commencement of athletics events on Tuesday.
Coaches are working closely with their athletes at the Stephen Keshi Stadium’s main bowl to ensure they are well-prepared for the competitions.
Abubakar Taminu, the 800m race winner from Niger State in 2024, is determined to defend his title and win two gold medals for his state.
”I am from Niger State. I am running 400 and 800 metres. I am ready for my events.
”I have prepared based on my successful training. I wish to deliver two gold medals for Niger State; that is what I promised my coach.
”This is my second time participating in the National Youth Games. I emerged champion of last year 800 metres. So, I am here to defend my title,” Taminu stated.
Other athletes expressed their readiness to compete in 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres race.
Meanwhile, Edo State Athletics Coach, Abdul Mustapha attributed the athletes’ confidence to the intensive training they have been undergoing, which he believed would pay off in the competitions.
He said that Edo State has 28 athletes for field and track events, saying that he is expecting at least 10 gold medals.
Mustapha expressed gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo and the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission for providing financial and moral support to the athletes and technical officials.
The athletics events are scheduled to commence on Tuesday, with athletes competing in various track and field events, including 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m races
