Okpebholo lauds Team Edo’s performance at National Youth Games

Governor Monday Okpebholo has commended Team Edo for their performance at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta.
The congratulations message is contained in a statement signed by Mr.  Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary to Okpebholo, on Tuesday in Benin.
As of Tuesday, Team Edo is currently topping the medals table with 19 gold, five silver, and three bronze medals in weightlifting, gymnastics, swimming, and karate.
Notably, Edo’s women weightlifters delivered a historic sweep of all nine gold medals on offer, while other athletes also excelled in their respective events.
Okpebholo attributed the team’s success to the deliberate investments and policy focus of his administration on the revival and repositioning of sports as a critical tool for youth development, empowerment, and social cohesion in Edo State.
He said the victory is a reflection of the new energy coursing through Edo’s sporting ecosystem, shaped by his SHINE Agenda, which prioritizes youth engagement and talent discovery.
The governor assured the athletes, coaches, and officials of continued support as they carry the banner of the Heartbeat State with excellence and pride.
He expressed confidence that Team Edo would continue to consolidate on this early momentum, validating the administration’s conviction that sports is not only about medals but also about building character, instilling discipline, and shaping the future of the youth.
“The outstanding performance of Team Edo is a testament to the effectiveness of the State’s sports development initiatives and the hard work and dedication of the athletes and coaches.
“As the Games progress, the Edo government remains optimistic that the team will continue to excel and bring glory to the state,” he said.
The games, which opened on Aug. 26 is to end on Sept. 6.
The games features 37 sports and has athletes from 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory participating.
Delta, host and defending champions as well as Lagos, Edo, Oyo and Bayelsa are leading the charge for who clinches this year’s crown.
