PDP insists on national convention in Ibadan, says it’s sacrosanct

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that its national convention will hold as scheduled in Ibadan, Oyo State, from November 15 to 16, 2025.
PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum, emphasised that the convention was sacrosanct and would not be postponed.
“As you know, the 2025 National Convention is scheduled to be held in Ibadan, and that is sacrosanct, and I want to make it very clear, ” he said.
Damagum said this during the inauguration of the 110-member National Convention Organizing Committee (NCOC) on Tuesday in Abuja.
The committee is led by Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as vice chairman and Governor Peter Mbah as secretary.
Damagum urged the committee to ensure fairness, equity, justice, and unity of purpose in organising the convention.
He emphasised the need to build public trust and prove that the PDP is the vanguard of democracy and blueprint for due process.
“My charge to this Committee is simple: as you carry out your work, let fairness, equity, justice, and unity of purpose be your guiding principles.
”Let us set aside personal grievances and ambitions that do not serve the collective interest.
“Let us focus on the bigger picture: building public trust by proving to Nigerians through this convention that the PDP remains the vanguard of democracy and the blueprint for due process.
“Let every member of our Party see, in your conduct, the assurance that PDP belongs to all.
”I have no doubt that we will deliver a convention that reaffirms the PDP as the Party of the People, by the People, and for the People, ” he said.
However, the convention may face challenges due to internal party disputes.
A group led by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has raised concerns and presented demands for the convention to be credible and inclusive.
These demands include holding fresh, transparent, and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra states in line with court judgments, conducting a new South East zonal congress, avoiding micro-zoning of offices beyond the general zoning formula adopted by the National Executive Committee (NEC) among others.
Despite these challenges, the PDP governors have expressed confidence in the party’s leadership and vowed to go ahead with the convention.
They emphasised that the party would not be intimidated or taken advantage of, with Governor Bala Mohammed stating, “Enough is enough”.
