Yelwata community remains in ruins despite Tinubu’s visit, says Tiv leader
The president of Mzough U Tiv UK (MUTUK), Victor Aleva, has expressed disappointment and frustration over the lack of progress in rebuilding the Yelwata community in Benue State.
The community was ravaged by a deadly herdsmen attack in June, claiming over 200 lives and displacing many more.
Aleva visited Yelwata last week and was dismayed by the state of the community.
“I was there in Yelewata last week Saturday and I saw things myself and I want to tell you that it is quite unfortunate.
”As I speak, nothing has changed,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday.
Aleva had earlier predicted that President Tinubu’s visit to Benue State would yield no tangible results, and his recent visit confirmed his suspicions.
“I told you here during my earlier interview that nothing good is going to come out of the President’s visit to Benue State.
”All those are just political, nothing is happening in Yelewata, I have video evidence, I have interview from the locals, I was there live with my entourage, ” he added.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the arrest of 26 persons suspected to be masterminds of the killings in Yelwata, just days after President Tinubu’s visit.
However, Aleva dismissed the announcement as “a lie,” questioning the whereabouts of the suspects.
“You know that is a lie. Because the president went there and scolded the Inspector-General of Police and just less than 48 hours or thereabout, they paraded some people. Where are the people?” he queried.
Aleva emphasised that the attack on Yelwata was not a herders-farmers clash but a calculated attempt to exterminate the people living in the village.
The community expected the president to order the rebuilding of their homes, not just “playing to the gallery” with promises.
President Tinubu had visited Benue State in June, following renewed killings that left scores dead, several injured, and many displaced.
